In this follow up interview , Robert L . Hackney clarifies points of interest from his time in the Navy . In 1947 Hackney went AWOL to go home and visit his family . During this visit he met the woman who, later that year , would become his wife . When Hackney returned to the Navy , he had to spend ten days in the brig as punishment . In the brig , Hackney was watched by the “goonie squad” who made him march if he messed up on any of his tasks . Little did they know that Hackney loved marching , so he would deliberately make mistakes . As a signalman on LCI-R 705 in the Battle of Okinawa , Hackney communicated with other ships via flags and blinking lights . Their LCI was equipped with rockets and they often made runs to the Okinawa beach in order to fire . They also delivered mail to the larger battle ships and received ice cream or some other treat in return . When Okinawa was captured , LCI-705 went to the Philippines . When it was announced that the war was over, Hackney’s ship celebrated raucously as they didn’t have the regulations that the other ships had. When Hackney was discharged he went to work with Cadillac Motors in Michigan , but after four months quit that job and returned to the military .
