Description
Robert L . Hackney was born on a farm in Greenbrier , Tennessee on October 13 , 1926 . Hackney’s father worked as the chief metalworker out of a company in Detroit , Michigan . His job required him to travel from state to state from March to November each year and his family joined him. For the remainder of the year , they would return to Tennessee . On December 7 , 1941 Hackney was in Detroit working as a paperboy and he sold 105 issues in a single night following the attack on Pearl Harbor . Hackney enlisted in the Navy in November 1943 , just after he had turned 17 years old , and received his basic training at the Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois . After completing his basic training , Hackney attended signal school at the University of Illinois for three or four months . Following his graduation from signal school , Hackney and some other men went to Boston , Massachusetts where they picked up their brand new landing craft infantry ship (LCI) and sailed it around the coast , through the Panama Canal , and to San Diego , California . Next , they sailed the ship to Pearl Harbor where they stayed for four months until heading to the South Pacific Theater for eighteen months . Their LCI was present for the entire Battle of Okinawa from April 1 1945 through June 22 and never got hit with a single bullet . The LCI only held thirty-five men , the majority of whom were young like Hackney . On April 15 , 1946 , after the end of the war , Hackney left the Navy . He spent ten months away before returning in February 1947 and spending the next eighteen years of his life in the Navy . He sailed on the Battleship Wisconsin and attended ground control approach school to become an air control man and direct planes in landing during bad weather . Hackney got married in 1947 and was made Chief in 1956 . He retired from the Navy in 1964 and spent the next twenty-two years of his life working for the Postal Service .
