Description
Leo Millard grew up on his parents’ farm in Delta County , west of Cooper , Texas . His father was a cotton farmer . His farm had fields of cotton and corn , the corn being for the mules . Mr . Millard goes into some depth about the process of selling the cotton , and how the price of the cotton is determined . He and his two sisters picked cotton , presumably on other farms , as well as their own, since they were paid 30 cents per day for their labor . Mr . Millard was able to buy his clothing with the money he earned . Before he was working for money , Mr . Millard did chores on the farm such as drawing water from the well and carrying in wood . He mentions that he lived without running water or even electricity . Mr . Millard lists reading and spelling as his favorite subjects in grade school . He mentions that he never really got into trouble . He completed high school and graduated in 1939 . When asked if he was worried about Hitler , Millard stated that Hitler was not discussed much , and he had no real worry about the idea of a potential German invasion , or even Hitler’s growing power . He then continues by discussing his various jobs after high school . It is not entirely clear whether Mr . Millard enlisted in the Navy before he was drafted , or simply chose the Navy once he received his draft notice , but either way , he served in the Navy . He goes into great length about his career in the Navy and the many career paths he tried out before settling on being a metal worker and welder . He expresses that Navy life is rather dull and not very exciting ; he never saw any combat . Mr . Millard describes his life after the Navy as a meat inspector in Fort Worth , Texas . He had the job for 3 years before he was recalled to service in the Navy . He moved back to Cooper , Texas after he retired from the Navy Summary contributed by: Aaron Key
